Particle Hack

The Spotlight vs. Magnifying Glass (は vs が)

💡 は (wa) is a theatre spotlight on the topic; が (ga) is a magnifying glass on the specific actor.

With は, whatever comes AFTER is new important info. With が, whatever comes BEFORE is the exact answer to "who/which one". This permanently solves the most confusing Japanese dilemma.

私は学生です (Watashi wa gakusei desu) vs. 私が学生です (Watashi ga gakusei desu)

As for me, I am a student (は) vs. *I* am the one who is the student (が).

Sentence Architecture

The Anchor Rule: Verb Always Lands Last (SOV)

💡 Japanese sentences are built like building blocks ending with an unmovable anchor (the verb).

English is SVO (I eat sushi). Japanese is SOV (I sushi eat). The verb is the final period. As long as your particles (を, に, で) are attached to words, the order of background elements before the verb can be flexible!

私は [time] に [place] で [object] を食べます (tabemasu = eat).
